Prediabetes is an early warning sign that might be headed toward diabetes, the condition when your blood sugar (glucose) level is higher than normal but not yet high enough to be considered diabetes. It occurs when your body doesn’t make or use the hormone insulin properly which causes too much glucose to build up in the blood. This can be very harmful to your body over time. It may lead to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke or some long-term damage of blood vessels and kidneys.
But progression can be stopped by taking some precautions like taking lifestyle modifications as diet, medication and exercise.
At first you have to understand what a prediabetes diagnosis means, for managing prediabetes, but usually it doesn’t cause that much symptoms.It develops very gradually,so when your blood glucose levels reach a certain level, your diabetes can be detected. A research shows that about 84 million people over age 20 in the U.S. have prediabetes, but 90% don’t know that they have it.
But still, you may notice some symptoms that can help you diagnose the prediabetes stage.
1. Increase of thirst:
Getting thirsty is the part of natural hydration. When our bodies are dehydrated, we feel the thirst. But if the thirst is more than usual, it might be the symptoms of prediabetes.
When the body starts working very hard to remove excess glucose in the blood, it will dilute the blood to eliminate the untreated sugar through urine which will often pull it from the surrounding cells, leaving them dehydrated and causing a chronic thirst.
2.Frequent urination, especially at night:
At this stage the body urinates more than usual. It is also the main symptoms of diabetes. It can lead to severe dehydration and if left untreated can affect kidney function.The kidneys filter blood by reabsorbing all of the sugar to make urine. As in this condition the level of sugar in the blood is too high, all of the sugar cannot be reabsorbed and some of this excess glucose from the blood ends up in the urine where it draws more water which results unusually large volume of urine.
3. Continuous Exhaustion:
The excess blood sugar can also lead to exhaustion. Despite eating full meals, your body will feel exhausted, you will feel like your body isn’t getting the fuel it needs. This symptom may increase other risks for prediabetes as well.
4. Increase of hunger:
Intaking too much sugar or glucose becomes difficult to process effectively which leaves a lot of sugar floating around the blood, where it cannot be used for energy. As a result, you may feel continuous hunger.
5. Vision become blurry:
Diabetes as well as prediabetes both can cause problems with your vision.When blood sugar levels escalate from high to low, the pupils widen improperly causing tunnel vision, blurred vision, and much more, eventually preventing them from focusing properly.
6. Increase of your belly size:
Obesity is caused when your body produces less insulin. It is a risk for both risk for both prediabetes and diabetes type 2. In this case, the pancreas is strained more to release extra insulin, thus the weight increases. This condition can also cause a lot more problems including being at higher risk of a heart attack, heart disease, and even a stroke.
7. Suffer weight loss, despite eating more:
Insufficient insulin prevents the body from getting glucose from the blood into the body’s cells to use as energy.In this case, the body starts burning fat and muscle for energy, reducing overall body weight.
8. Increase of blood pressure:
High blood pressure accelerates the risk of prediabetes in-case of high blood pressure to work harder to circulate blood throughout the body. For this, it becomes more difficult to eliminate blood sugar.
9. Skin problems:
If you start developing darkened skin patches on your neck, armpits, or other areas where your skin is naturally thin, then you shouldn’t overlook the matter as it may be the way that your body is showing signs of becoming more and more insulin resistant or it may also be a sign of diabetes type 2. It is a symptom of prediabetes that should never be ignored either. Due to increased levels of insulin in the blood, these dark colors can be seen in the skin.
